Ishigaki beef steak at St.ELMO, Ishigaki

Ishigaki Beef

Ishigaki beef,
grilled by the sea.

Sirloin and fillet, 120g and 180g.
Lunch from ¥7,800, dinner from ¥9,800.

01 — Ishigaki Beef

Only cattle raised here
may be called Ishigaki beef.

Ishigaki beef is a registered trademark of JA Okinawa. Only Japanese Black cattle raised in the Yaeyama Islands, which include Ishigaki, may carry the name. Cattle raised anywhere else cannot be called Ishigaki beef.

Production is small, so little of it leaves the islands. We think it is a beef worth eating where it is raised.

We serve two cuts, sirloin and fillet. Both come as a single plate with bisque and your choice of rice or bread.

02 — Cuts

Sirloin and fillet.
How they differ.

Same cattle, entirely different eating.

Sirloin

Sirloin

From the back. Marbled enough to turn sweet as you chew — the flavour most people picture when they think of steak. If it is your first visit, start here.

Fillet

Fillet

A scarce cut from deep inside the animal — only a few kilos per head. Lean and remarkably tender. Good if rich fat sits heavy with you, or if you want to eat more of it.

Half & Half

Half and half

90g of sirloin and 90g of fillet on one plate, so you can taste them side by side. Chosen by people who cannot decide, and by couples marking an occasion.

Portion

120g or 180g

120g sits right alongside the courses either side of it. Choose 180g if you want a proper amount of meat. Ishigaki beef is sweet with fat, so it satisfies sooner than you expect.

03 — Menu

At lunch, and at dinner.

The same Ishigaki beef, served day and night.

04 — The View

We grill as
the sun goes down.

About ten minutes by car from central Ishigaki. Every seat faces the ocean, and the sun sets straight into the horizon in front of you.

Sunset moves through the year — around 19:25 in summer, around 17:45 in winter. See sunset times on Ishigaki. We suggest arriving about 30 minutes before.

05 — FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is Ishigaki beef?

A registered trademark of JA Okinawa. Only Japanese Black cattle raised in the Yaeyama Islands, which include Ishigaki, may carry the name. Production is small, so little of it leaves the islands.

Should I choose sirloin or fillet?

Sirloin if you want sweet fat and a classic steak flavour; fillet if rich fat sits heavy with you, or if you want tenderness. If you cannot decide, we serve 90g of each on one plate.

Can I have Ishigaki beef steak at lunch?

Yes. We serve the same Ishigaki beef at lunch. Lunch starts at ¥7,800 for 120g of sirloin; dinner starts at ¥9,800.

Do I need a reservation?

Steaks can be reserved on the day, and walk-ins are welcome, though you may have to wait when we are full. Only the eight-course menu needs a reservation by the previous day.

Can I watch the sunset while I eat?

Every seat faces the ocean and the sun sets into the horizon in front of you. Sunset ranges from about 17:45 to about 19:25 through the year, so we suggest arriving 30 minutes before.
